about
Works by Président Vertut
Matthieu Vertut was born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, in 1978. He lives in Geneva and works under the pseudonym of Président Vertut. After a degree in economics in Bordeaux and various work experiences in France and the UK, he graduated from the HEAD (Haute Ecole d'Art et de Design) in Geneva in 2008.
Alternately the figurehead of rationalized artistic economics, a fraudster involved in dubious arrangements in the heart of the financial crisis, a politician and the founder of a Republic of the "extreme middle", Président Vertut is somehow the evil twin of the artist, made up of autobiographical elements and contemporary topics.
This character's adventures have been the subject of Vertut's artistic research for the past ten years at least, employing various mediums to create a complex, deepening, and however growingly consistent network of metaphorical objects that challenge the place of the signifier and the signified in global economics, politics, the media and the art world.
